Notes on Roselle Weights

Generally speaking, the most marketable part of the roselle plant is its calyx, both fresh and dried. Tropical regions selling much fresh calyx, and fresh leaf though not recorded in this study. Import/export markets as well as local tropical markets where roselle grows both use the dried calyx for various edible preparations. With this in mind, the highest value product, without taking into account leaf, is both the fresh and dried calyx. And these comparisons are designed to show the weights we experienced from all these varieties grown in the same location, harvested at teh same time and dried in the same machines together to calculate fairly reliable variables based on plant part and variety.

Fresh Calyx & Capsule (Whole) to Dry Calyx Weight Ratio

- 'Crystal' :

94.1% Fresh Whole : 5.9% Dried Calyx. 1,000kg Whole Harvest = 59kg Dried Calyx

- 'Bicolor' :

% Fresh Whole : % Dried Calyx. 1,000kg Whole Harvest = kg Dried Calyx

- 'Lime' :

% Fresh Whole : % Dried Calyx. 1,000kg Whole Harvest = kg Dried Calyx

- 'Ruihe Red' :

% Fresh Whole : % Dried Calyx. 1,000kg Whole Harvest = kg Dried Calyx

- 'Thailand' :

95% Fresh Whole : 5% Dried Calyx. 1,000kg Whole Harvest = 50kg Dried Calyx

A note on marketability. White/Green and light colored varieties are more easily stained and discolored both on the plant by natural factors and during the drying process if not perfected. With this in mind, there is some wastage in discolored product due to drying technique, field damage and handling damage that is less noticeable in the red varieties thus leading to a slightly higher amount of wasted product with the non-red varieties. Though the taste and quality is often not damaged, the appearance is and thus the value is also reduced which will lead to extra costs in labor as well as reduced amounts of yield. It is interesting to note, so far we experience the crystal variety to be heavy yielding and earlier producing than most other types, and these factors can be played against each other and your market to determine the best route.
