RoselleHibiscus sabdariffaRoselle Usage Information In Terrariums: The root pieces make an interesting looking feature, while the dried fruits have a strange alien appearance. In Vivariums: Very suitable for vivaria, though note that this species decomposes relatively fast in moist conditions. Even the thick root masses would decompose in a year or 2 in a vivarium like a dart frog enclosure with isopods. The fruit tips are quite sharp and are best not used for soft skinned animals such as amphibians, geckos etc. In Aquariums: We have not tested this species in aquaria, though roselle is used as both human food and animal feed and we have no reasons to assume its toxicity. However, we have not tested it. General Appearance: Fruit are balls that split open from the tip, usually into 5. The tips are pointed and contain small hairs which can be itchy. We suggest boiling first to remove hairs if placing it inside an enclosure with animals. The root balls are of no concern and have the typical craziness a root ball should have. Long Term: These are soft tissue plants with hard fibers. In moist conditions they will decompose relatively fast for their size. With roots and stems, if placed into aquaria or vivaria with isopods and the like, most likely a net of fibers will be left at the end, giving them an interesting look even in decomposition.
